If this is the first time you are hearing of this amazing herb, it certainly will not be the last. Manjistha may very well be the apex of all superfoods. With a list of seemingly endless benefits, it will surely be your next obsession!
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia), also know as Indian madder, is an ayurvedic tonic herb that has been prized for centuries for its long list of benefits and uses. This bitter, astringent herb was traditionally used and valued for it extreme effectiveness in cleansing and purifying the blood, liver, and lymphatic system. But it doesn’t end there. Manjistha is a potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial. It has been used as a muscle relaxant; to ease stress, anxiety and depression; heal bruises and reduce arthritic pain and swelling; and relieve digestive issues, allergies and skin-related issues, such as acne. It enhances circulation, helps to process and remove toxins from the body, and has even been used to dissolve tumors. Overall it is a powerful immune stimulant that deserves a place in your herbal medicine cabinet!
WHY YOU SHOULD TRY IT: Manjistha is possibly most effective at aiding the lymphatic system in the removal of toxic buildup in the body. Why is this important? Our lymphatic system plays an incredibly important role and is often our first line of defense when it comes to removing and purifying toxic substances and keeping our system running smoothly. Even if we are careful to consume a clean and pure diet, we are still exposed to environmental and chemical pollutants that we may have a challenge excreting. The process of trying to rid the body of these substances can overburden and create symptomatic complications in the body. A sluggish lymphatic system is actually increasingly common today and detrimental to women’s health, leading to issues such as:
• dry skin and skin rashes, or persistent acne
• digestive issues and constipation
• swelling and bloating or slowed digestion
• mood swings, PMS
• brain fog
• low energy and feeling tired all the time
• environmental allergies
• breast swelling or tenderness around your monthly cycle
• low immunity – constantly catching colds or feeling like you are on the verge of getting sick
• soreness or stiffness
• unable to lose weight, especially around the midsection
LET’S GET TOGETHER: The root of the manjistha plant is the section that is most commonly used in medicinal remedies. It can be purchased whole and used to make teas or tinctures, or alternatively, you can purchase it in a powdered form and take it as a supplement. As with all herbs, be sure to source organic and from a high quality reputable company, such as Banyan Botanicals or LifeSpa.
Manjistha may also be used externally to soothe and treat skin conditions such as acne. Our favorite complexion-improving remedy calls for mixing honey or yogurt with powdered manjistha and applying it to the face or body as a mask for 10-15 minutes. Be sure to test a small area of the skin first to see how your skin will react.
Note: Like beets, manjistha is deep red in color and may temporarily turn the urine orange or brown.
The phrase “every woman should be taking it” is not the Ayurvedic way. We treat the individual not the disease, therefore the approach of assuming one pill can fix many is more a western approach to healing.Herbs can heal or they can be poison if they are not used correctly. And it shouldn’t be an obsession – even a good thing can turn bad when the season/time of life/chronic disease shifts. I highly recommend consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner in your area to find out whether Manjishta is the right herb to be taking.
There are all these claims but no scientific studies are published…there wasn’t even one citation. Therefore everything written here is not valid and this is a poorly written blog.
Speaking of bitter hervdy .you could use a little .you sound quite a agitated and bitter human being
I have had amazing benefits from using this herb internally & externally. Don’t listen to negative ass commenters!! There is plenty of “scientific research” readily available to look up on the old google search if that is what you are looking for. Thank you!
I really enjoyed the post! Thank you! Whilst the question Sandra addressed earlier had crossed my mind in terms I think that any herbal supplement is 100 x more important to know than let’s say chemical products. Some herbs can be taken by ALL doshas. So I was wondering if Manjistha is one of those like e.g. Amla, Turmeric and certain other Satvic herbs which balance all three doshas. So this would be a good add on to the article… but all in all a big THANK you as I will now research the rest.
PS: …. just found this on Banyan Botanicals for all those interested!
QUOTE: “Doshas (constitutions): Balancing for all doshas, may aggravate vata if taken in excess”
Been taking this herb for four months.. thought it gave me more energy. .but back to share exaustion again as I suffer from hemachromatosis
I have been taking this for a couple weeks, bought it from Banyan Botanicals on Amazon. My armpit was swollen around the time of my period and I have peri menopausal breast pain all the time. I read about this herb helping the lymphatic system, so I figured I have nothing to loose. Well my armpit swelling is gone and my breast pain has lessened greatly. I attribute it to this healing herb.
I believe if you’re drawn to a certain herb then you should try it. I was drawn to this herb so I bought the powder & forgot that I had it. Well long story short. My eyes & lips started blistering up and itching. I’m still not sure from what. I mixed the power in with some neem tea & organic honey. Blisters disappeared in less than 4 min. I found my bottle off of eBay for really cheap. Your higher self should never steer you wrong.
Just simply amazing. Thank you higher self for my instant healing & letting me remember that I had this herb.
I’m anxious to try this. I have psoriasis
I am 57. Can I take manjistha tea
I have several swollen lympnodes in my neck. I’m.scared and desperate. How do I know if this will help?
I also had chronically swollen lymph nodes in neck, sometimes under arms as well. Found out my body was inflamed from RF radiation we’re all surronded by with wifi & cells everywhere. Once I started turning off WIfi at night & use wired ethernet and landline phones the swelling went away. Read up on EMF sensitivy, blessings!
Ayurveda is great but I would find some Ayurveda remedies and take the list to an Ayurveda practitioner and ask before you start using anything. Sometimes if your body releases too many toxins, it can flood your environment with too much acid waste and you could end up feeling way worse before you feel better. Read “Alkalize or Die,” and “Back to Eden.”
And really getting to a primary care doctor and an Ayurveda practitioner as well and combining the knowledge and making the best decision for your circumstance.
I tried Manjushta Kwath for 3 months after trying allooathic medicine for my skin problems. It is just amazing to see results.I bow to Ayurveda for little ir no side affects.
to rub on skin can one use manustha with coconut oil rather than honey or yogart? and would that be good for skin itching that seems to be coming from inside yet ends up on skin after itching like a little pimple….aall over body… thank you
Nice work! This blog about Manjistha is very amazing and informative. Blogs like these help in spreading awareness about the gems of Ayurveda which went unnoticed and unacclaimed to a common person. Manjistha is definitely a superfood and one everyone should consult an Ayurvedic practitioner on ways to include this powerful herb in their diet.
Many of my Hashimoto symptoms are addressed by
these promising benefits. I’m intent on going to
Banyon Botanicals for product.
Ayurveda does not give out an herb for everyone saying its great and everyone should take it. It is not allopathic symptom treatment, it is an individualized diagnostic system. Manistha, while basically tridoshic, will still create more of an imbalance in some people with the right set of imbalances. What you doing is not promoting ayurveda but just writing articles to sell, its actually wrong. These are not ‘gems of ayurveda’ but rather the destruction of ayurveda. There is no lymph system in ayurveda. there is no superfood in ayurveda. Every substance is medicine in the hands of the wise and poison in the hands of the ignorant. Your not promoting wisdom. Your playing on peoples naivety.
I would love to get this herb. Could you recommend a company to buy this herb?
But Manjistha causes cancer !
I have had a lemon size gland in my neck for over a year. Been in this 2 weeks and it’s down to walnut size. Great herb!
